Why Him? is a surprisingly touching and funny film about a father (Bryan Cranston) who comes to terms with the fact that his daughter (Zoey Deutch) is dating a wealthy older man (James Franco). Despite his initial misgivings, Cranston’s character comes to see that Franco is a good man who genuinely loves his daughter. The two men form an unlikely bond as they try to navigate the difficult waters of family and relationships.
The film is well-acted by all involved, with Cranston and Franco particularly standing out. The chemistry between the two men is palpable, and their scenes together are some of the highlights of the film. Mullally and Deutch are also both excellent in their respective roles. Hamburg’s direction is confident and assured, and he keeps the film moving at a steady clip.
Why Him? is ultimately a feel-good film about family, love, and understanding. It’s an enjoyable watch from start to finish, and it’s sure to leave you with a smile on your face.
The Plot
The Plot:
Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is living a peaceful life with his girlfriend Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), until she is possessed by a powerful entity called the Dark Phoenix. Wolverine must travel to Japan to confront an old enemy, Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber), who is also after the Dark Phoenix. Meanwhile, Jean Grey struggles to control her new powers, and the X-Men must protect her from themselves.
The Characters
The movie follows Ned Fleming, played by Bryan Cranston. He is a successful, family-oriented man whose life is turned upside down when he discovers that his daughter Stephanie, played by Zoey Deutch, is dating a much older man, Laird Mayhew, played by James Franco.
Ned is worried about Stephanie and decides to fly out to LA to meet Laird and see what he is really like. When he first meets Laird, it is clear that he is not the kind of man Ned was hoping for his daughter. He is crass, vulgar and seems to have no filter whatsoever. However, as Ned gets to know Laird better, he starts to realize that there is more to him than meets the eye. Laird is actually a very sensitive and caring person, and Ned starts to see him as a good match for Stephanie after all.
The movie also stars Megan Mullally as Barb Fleming, Ned’s wife; Griffin Gluck as Scotty Fleming, Ned and Barb’s son; Keegan-Michael Key as Dr. Pete Pansky,Laird’s best friend; and Kaley Cuoco as Marla Mabrey
The Acting
The acting in this film is atrocious. The leading male, James Franco, chews the scenery like he’s auditioning for a role in a spaghetti Western. The rest of the cast is forgettable. Even Bryan Cranston, who is normally excellent, sleepwalks through his role.
The Directing
The Directing by Deedle-Dee Productions, Red Hour Films, and RatPac-Dune Entertainment was decent. The directing was able to keep me sufficiently engaged throughout the entire film.I will say that I believe the average movie goer will find the directing quite good.
The Cinematography
The cinematography was one of the most interesting aspects of the movie. The shots were carefully composed and the colors were very muted, which added to the overall feeling of unease and isolation. The use of close-ups was effective in conveying the characters’ emotional states, and the use of music was effectively used to heighten the tension in some scenes.
The Music
The score by Mychael Danna is fitting and perfect for the film. The original songs are also fun and work very well in the context of the movie.
The Editing
The editing in Why Him? was unfortunately not very good. In several scenes, the editing was very choppy and did not flow well. This made it difficult to follow the story and understand what was happening. Additionally, there were several continuity errors throughout the film, which detracted from the overall viewing experience.
The Costumes
The costumes in Why Him? are unique and help the characters to stand out. The movie is set in the present day, but the costumes have a retro feel that is reminiscent of the 1980s. The colours are bright and the patterns are bold. This is in keeping with the movie’s overall aesthetic, which is colourful and fun.
The main character, Ned (Bryan Cranston), wears a lot of plaid. This is a nod to his Scottish heritage, as well as a visual indication of his “gruff but lovable” personality. His daughter, Stephanie (Zoey Deutch), also wears plaid, but her style is more girly and preppy. This reflects her bubbly personality and her privileged upbringing. Her boyfriend, Laird (James Franco), stands out from both of them with his outrageous clothing choices. His style is eccentric and eclectic, which matches his outgoing persona.
The costumes in Why Him? are both eye-catching and appropriate for the characters wearing them. They help to create an aesthetic that is both playful and stylish.
The Set Design
The set design of Why Him? was excellent. It was very realistic and believable. The acting was also good. It was believable and the characters were likable.
