The Voice of Sonic
In the Sonic The Hedgehog movie, the titular character is voiced by Ben Schwartz. Schwartz is an American actor, comedian, and writer who is known for his work on Parks and Recreation and House of Lies.
The History of Sonic
Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game character created by Sega in 1991. The title character of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, he is a blue hedgehog with supersonic speed. In most games, Sonic must stop his nemesis Dr. Eggman from building robotic machines, as well as collecting the power Rings and Chaos Emeralds.
Sonic made his first appearance in the self-titled video game Sonic the Hedgehog released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991. He was designed by game developer Naoto Ohshima, and was inspired by Mario, as well as other cartoon characters including Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, and Bugs Bunny. The title of the game was originally going to be “Mr. Needlemouse”, and Ohshima eventually changed it to “Sonic” because he thought it sounded more catchy.
The Design of Sonic
The design of Sonic was handled by Idw’s Evan Stanley, who also did the redesigns for the comic series. For the movie, Sega wanted to make Sonic look like he does in the games, with his spines and his shoes. “We kept going back to that as our north star,” says Leader. “How do we make sure he feels like he’s from the games but also works in this movie world?”
The Sonic Movie
The Sonic movie is an upcoming live action/CGI hybrid film based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise. The film is being directed by Jeff Fowler (in his feature directorial debut) and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. In the film, Sonic tries to stop Dr. Robotnik from capturing him and turning him into a weapon.
The cast of the Sonic movie includes Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Mrs. Wachowski, Neal McDonough as Dr. Robotnik, and Jim Carrey as Eggman.
The Sonic Movie Release
On February 14th, 2020 the first Sonic the Hedgehog Movie trailer was released. The movie is set to come out in theatres on November 8th, 2020. The movie will be a mix of both live action and CGI. In the trailer, we see a live action human character named Tom Wachowski (played by James Marsden) and his wife Maddie (played by Tika Sumpter). We also see Sonic portrayed both in live action and CGI. It has not been revealed who will be voicing Sonic in the film.
The Sonic Movie Reception
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released in 2020 to generally poor reception. One of the controversial aspects of the movie was the decision to reimagine Sonic as a live-action character with human teeth. The voice of Sonic, Ben Schwartz, has come under fire for his performance in the movie.
The Sonic Movie Trailer
The Sonic movie trailer was released today, and along with it, the casting for the titular blue hedgehog. Ben Schwartz, best known for his work on Parks and Recreation and House of Lies, will be voicing Sonic in the live-action/CGI hybrid film.
This is a bit of a departure from the previous Sonic games, where Sonic was voiced by Mike Pollock. In the trailer, we see that Schwartz’s Sonic is a lot more… talkative than Pollock’s incarnation of the character. It’s not clear yet if this is going to be a fundamental change to Sonic’s personality or if Schwartz is just putting his own spin on things.
We also see that Jim Carrey will be playing Dr. Robotnik, which should be interesting given Carrey’s over-the-top acting style. It’s possible that he could tone it down for this role, but it’s more likely that we’ll see him going full cartoon villain.

The Sonic Movie Marketing
Much has been made of the marketing of the Sonic movie. In particular, the use of CGI to de-age Sonic and make him look like a child has come under fire from some quarters.
Critics have also noted that the voice of Sonic – Ben Schwartz – is far too enthusiastic and high-pitched for the character, who is supposed to be cool and collected.
Some have even gone so far as to say that the choice of Schwartz – best known for his work on Parks and Recreation – was a poor one, and that someone like Ryan Reynolds would have been a better choice.
However, it seems that Paramount Pictures are standing by their decision, with director Jeff Fowler recently defending Schwartz’s performance.
