Early life and education
Maude Adams was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Asaph Adams and Ellen Parker. Asaph Adams was a popular stage actor and producer, while Ellen Parker had been trained in music and drama. The couple married in 1867, when Maude was one year old. They subsequently had four more children: Winifred (1869), Shakespeare (1870–71), Perkins (1873), and Franklin (1874).

Maude Adams was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Brigham Young’s second wife, Mary Isabella Horne. When Adams was five years old her family moved to San Francisco where she spent most of her childhood. When she was thirteen she joined a travelling stock company and toured Australia. After two years touring, she returned to San Francisco and finished high school.
Adams began her stage career at age 18 in 1891, playing “Ingomar” in Benjamin Hooker’s production of “The Hearts of Oak”, and then toured with other stock companies. Three years later, she played Maid Marian in Robin Hood.
Awards and nominations
Haley Mills won a Golden Globe and an Award of the Young Artist Foundation for her performance as Maude in El Dorado.
Legacy
Maude appeared in only a handful of movies, but her performances left a lasting impression on those who saw them. One of her most memorable roles was as the titular character in the 1967 film El Dorado. Maude brought a touch of class to the otherwise comedic Western, and her performance earned her critical acclaim.
