The Filming Locations
The exterior shots for the house were filmed at 726 S. Kenilworth Avenue in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The two-story house with a big porch was originally built in 1892. The neighbor’s house to the north of the property, shown in several scenes, is 728 S. Kenilworth Avenue; it was built in 1901. In the film, the Keaton family’s address is 652 Arlington Place; this does not correspond to a real street address in Oak Park.
The sets
Land was filmed on location in New Zealand, taking advantage of the country’s stunning landscapes. Director Peter Jackson wanted to create a sense of “Scope and scale and majesty,” and he succeeded. From the sweeping plains to the towering mountains, the film’s sets are as impressive as its special effects.
